Penarth Remembers

We commemorate 100 years since the end of World War One


Below are some of the events taking place over the weekend November 9th-11th 2018. This programme has been prepared by the Friends of St. Augustine’s. A full programme and further details are available at: www.penarthtowncouncil.gov.uk.


Friday 9th November

10am The Dedication of a Commemorative Tree

Top of Cliff Hill (southern end of the Esplanade, overlooking the Bristol Channel).


11am Dedication of two Stones to commemorate two men who were awarded the Victoria Cross.

There will be a Short Service at the Garden of Remembrance, Rectory Road.

Organised by Penarth Town Council and Dr Jonathan Hicks.


11.30am – 4.00pm Penarth Remembers – Commemoration Event, Paget Rooms, Victoria Road

Those present will include St Augustine’s Roll of Honour Project Team, All Saints Church, Western Front Association, several schools and other groups.

Organised by the World War 1 Commemorative Group / Penarth Town Council.


Saturday 10th November

2pm – 4pm Open Church Extra at St Augustine’s Church, Church Place South, CF64 1BA

This is an opportunity to:

• View the town’s first memorial to those who died in the First World War

• Meet the Roll of Honour Project Team

• Wander at leisure around this splendid church, designed by William Butterfield and built in 1866.

• Meet the Church Archivist who will have Parish Records available

• Meet the Habitat and Heritage Team who will be available to help locate family graves.

2pm – 4pm Open Church at All Saints, Victoria Square

There will be a display commemorating the 32 men named on All Saints’ Roll of Honour, and an opportunity to lay a wreath or Poppy Cross .

Organised by All Saints Church.


Concert at All Saints Church, Victoria Square - unfortunately this has been cancelled.


Sunday 11th November

Parade

The parade will leave Station Approach at 09.45hrs and proceed via Rectory Road to the Garden of Remembrance at the corner of Alexandra Park.

After the Wreath laying ceremony we will march to St Augustine’s Church arriving for the service to start at 10.30hrs

All who feel inclined to join us on this march will be most welcome.


10.30am Remembrance Service (please be seated by 10.15am)

St. Augustine’s Church, Church Place South, CF64 1BA.

The service will be led by the Rev. Mark Jones and Rev. Canon Peter Cox and will include the laying of tributes to those who died in the Great War.
